Today I awoke to head to New York. I had a voice lesson in the city. I have had this book on my shelf for the longest time called “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle and decided to read it on the train. When I started reading it, it talked about being able to look at the world as if you were just born and seeing how amazing everything is. The next thing I know, a father put his 5 year old daughter in the seat next to me on the train. She first introduced herself to me, as Pearl. I told her that she had such a beautiful name and she said everyone tells her that. She then told me that she was a kid, but I knew that already. I was going to continue reading my book, but she suddenly pointed out the window and said…look how the water sparkles, isn’t that amazing? And then wow the clouds are so nice, I wish I was on an airplane and wow…I don’t need to wear a seatbelt on this train. She then turned to me and said your nails are so beautiful and your bracelet and your hair is really comfy…can I touch it? I said, of course! She then told me she had been to India and then wanted to tell me a secret…”my friend can’t spell yes,” I told her she should teach him, but she said that she could not spell yes, either. Suddenly, she asked me why I was going to New York. I told her that I had a voice lesson and she said, “Oh, I sing and have a beautiful voice.” I then asked her to sing her favorite song and she proudly sang Twinkle, Twinkle Little star. She asked me if I went to the gym and she said she loved to go to gym class. She then started looking outside and asking me what everything was and why everything was so dirty outside. She said people were not taking care of our earth. She said she thought the graffiti we passed by looked like Indian writing. She then said the trees looked like Christmas trees.
It was so amazing to me how much she could see outside. The same things that I have passed dozens of times on the train were shown to me in a whole new way by a 5 year old and I could see just what the book was talking about. I am excited to read on and see how much more newness I will see in everyday life.
