I have realized that I am the type of person that always needs to have fun. Kids often complain, "This isn't fun!" when it comes to homework or long drives but for me, all the stuff that isn't fun, I try to make fun or get the most out of.
I became really focused these past weeks and although I kind of stretched myself thin, I had fun in the process. Last weekend, I choreographed an Indian dance, did a scene as a zombie, and a parody of Christina Aguilera's National Anthem for the TV show, Zombie Etiquette, which is filmed here in Princeton. It was a lot of work preparing for the show, but once we began filming, it was so much fun. I was able to meet some really great people in the process too. Fashion Designer for Project Runway, Pamela Ptak, was on set, as well as models and actors. It was really great to be immersed by people who love to entertain and create something.
On Saturday night, I went to an Indie night at the Paul Robeson Arts Center with my roommate and watched amazingly talented musicians and singers perform. It was only five dollars and we were able to get so much out of it. I was able to meet the performers after the show and was really inspired by them. I actually wrote five songs after the show. It was hosted by Sarah Donner and had performers such as Avi Wisnia, Gillian Grassie, and Miracles of Modern Science. It made me realize how music truly feeds my soul and is such a part of who I am. It can express so much and touch a world of people. It is its own language that can reach anyone.
On Sunday, I had an audition at Drexel University in Pennsylvania for a small student film. I didn't want to go all the way out there just for the audition, so my roomate and I went early and explored Philadelphia. We went to the Reading Terminal Market (http://www.readingterminalmarket.org/), which was so nice. We ended up having Middle Eastern food there. We then went to all different stores and just walked around. It was a great day and we improvised songs to pass the time during our long car ride home.
This week, I also decided to enter a contest that my mother had suggested I enter. It was for The Folger's Jingle Contest. My roomate and I decided to enter together, so we stayed up late coming up with ideas of how to express, "The Best Part of Waking Up is Folgers in Your Cup." We ended up coming up with a cool idea, but when we looked at last year's entries, we noticed that they were really professional and recorded on real film. I decided to call director, John Cafaro, whose independent films I was in and asked him if he could film us. He was so excited by the idea, so we went to his house from 3:30pm till 10:30pm and filmed on Thursday. It was such a long period of time, but we were able to bounce off of each other's energies and get really creative. We had many bloopers in the process, that cracked us up. I am so excited to see the results of our work and to be a part of this contest. I am so lucky to know great people to collaborate with towards a common goal and have fun in the process.
All of the things I did required work, and those are aside from my day jobs, but I always make sure I have fun. I think you can make anything fun. It just requires some creativity from time to time. I am looking forward to what other fun adventures will occur in my life and who I will be connected to in the process. Make sure you have fun today and find your own fun.
