It is amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it! Recently, I decided that I wanted to learn an instrument because I need accompaniment to my voice when I sing. I know how to play piano, but not well enough to improvise chords behind songs I write. I decided guitar might be the best instrument to start with. I spent one night trying to learn the chords to Jason Mraz' hit song, "I'm Yours." I ended up getting down the chords, but my fingers killed the next day because of the steel strings. I then remembered that a good friend of mine, Angelo Chianese, had told me that he would teach me how to play the Ukulele some day. Angelo has a singing telegram company and he performs ukulele, as he sings. I worked for him as a singing telegram for a party, but without the lovely sound of the ukulele and I was ready to learn.
Last week, he was nice enough to take the time out of his day and give me a one hour lesson on this beautiful instrument. He explained to me that Ukulele means "Jumping Flea" in the Hawaiian language. He taught me how to strum with different rhythms and how to play "You are my Sunshine" I fell in love with the instrument and have been playing it every morning. I am most likely annoying my roomates, but I hope to learn many songs because the sound is so happy and uplifting. Angelo has definitely been a ray of sunshine and an angel to my life and there is a great article that was written about him that you all must read here...
